Walking on the Chadar (frozen river) of Zanskar is an ultimate experience for adventure lover. This is one of the most thrilling yet a challenging one for the trekkers in Ladakh. The temperature during winter in Ladakh drops down to -5 to 40oc, yet the trekkers, the exceptional adamant one choose this trekking. Since this trek demands ample of physical strength, one must be above 20 and should be physically fit. Within 8 days you will test the chilly weather, but with the satisfaction of reaching the unseen village and people by the rest of the world. This is the only way in and out for the people of Zanskar in winters when all other ways are closed due to heavy snowfall at high passes. With the planning of temperature during winter, the Zanskar river turns into a sheet of snow; this is when the famous Chadar trek is undertaken.  Like a walk to paradise, the Chadar treks swipe several trekker dreams making it a part of their diary. The journey leads off from Ladakh to the snowbound villages of the Zanskar valleys. Trekking on the ice, the frozen Zanskar river, an average 5-7hrs daily at an easy pace but a reasonable degree of physical fitness is needed to sustain walking for a day during winter condition. The trek commences from the village of Chilling located not far from the confluence of Indus and the Zanskar river. The trek follows the river gorge through a spectacular landscape, a photographer’s paradise, offering occasional sighting of wildlife. Chilling and Lingshed are the only sizeable villages on this trek.

Trek grade: –   Simple walks on ice(frozen river) every day on an average four to seven hour, strictly depends on weather condition.

Grading: –    A reasonable degrees of physical fitness is needed for this trek.

DAY 1 DELHI TO LEH

Arrival at leh airport, you will be received by our representative and transferred to the hotel . The entire day is require to rest at the hotel as you need to acclimatize well to the high altitude of ladakh, located at 3500m above sea level. Since it is the peak season of winter, the temperature will go down from -20oc, you will definitely feel the extreme chill from the moment you get down from the flight. Overnight stay at the hotel in leh.

DAY2 SIGHTSEEING OF HEMIS, THIKSEY AND SHEY 

After having your breakfast, drive for a full day sightseeing by visiting Shey palace; it got its name due to the reflection of the palace seen on the lake situated below the palace. Also you will visit Thiksey monastery situated 17km south of Leh, it is one of the most beautiful of all the monasteries, later you will visit the Hemis monastery situated 45km south of leh, it is the largest monastery of ladakh. Overnight hotel in leh.

DAY3 LEH TO CHILLING (3200M), 5HRS DRIVE (TAXI / BUS)

In the morning after breakfast drive towards Nimo where the confluence of river Zanskar and Indus is located , from there take left and drive along the Zanskar river till you reach Sumdado. At chilling after lunch visit the white copper artists famous for their handmade works.

DAY4 CHILLING – TILATADO- SHINGRA- GONGMA, 5HRS

After having breakfast start walking towards Tilatdo (5Hrs) from where the trek will start till you reach Shingra gongma. Today is the day you will actually start walking on the frozen river, you will pitch your camp at the bank of Zanskar river. As the dusk ascent the coldness will arise too, your sleeping bag and the warm water will keep you warm.

Stay overnight in the tent.

DAY5 TREK SHINGRA-GONGMA-DEEPYOKMA( 3300M),4HRS

After breakfast with a hot cup of tea to beat the freezing weather and energize you for yet another challenging 4hrs trek to Deepyokma. Starting this trek to Deepyokma where you will see number of Cave and you will also see Tsomopaldar, naturally flowing spring water.

Overnight stay in camp or cave.

DAY6 DEEPYOKMA – NYARAKPULU (3400M),4-5HRS

Start the trek from Deepyokma, after 4-5hrs of walk you will be reach Nyarakpulu . Another one hrs walk up along with a small stream you will reach a beautiful village called Nyarak. From here Singee- la will be visible. Which is a summer trek pass.

Overnight in camp.

DAY7 NYARAKPULLU – LINGSHED (3800M), 6-7HRS

The trek continues along the main portion of the frozen Zanskar River, and takes almost 4-5hrs. Arrive at Lingshed village and enjoy the pleasure of sleeping at a family house at this beautiful village instead of tented camp. This village is located in one of the most remote parts of ladakh and remain completely  isolated from the rest of the world for about 6month. This is quite a unique experience as it will give you a glimpse of the local life style and let you mingle with local people. Lingshed is the only village which is home to be beautiful monastery.  All your tiredness will vanish after spending the night at Lingshed village. In Homestays local heating is available.

DAY8 LINGSHED (FULL DAY REST )

Spend the day exploring Lingshed village, its monastery and a solar school, along with a hostel built by an Austrain who also happens to be the caretaker of the school . Lingshed is connected with other part of ladakh only through trek route therefore in winter hardly any tourists visits this place.

Overnight home stay.

DAY9 LINGSHED TO NYARAKPULU 4-5HRS

Early morning say good bye to beautiful Lingshed village and start walk back through the same step path 4-5 hrs and then walk on the frozen sheet for another 1-2hrs till you reach Nyarakpulu.

Overnight stay at the Nyarakpulu.

DAY10 NYARAKPULLU – TSOMOPALDAR (3300M) 4HRS

Taking the same route back from Nyarakpullu to Tsomopaldar .

Overnight camp.

DAY11 TREK TSOMOPALDAR – TILATDO (3200M) 5HRS

Trek back from Tsomopalder to Shigra-gongma and then to Tilatdo.

Overnight camp.

DAY12 TILATDO –CHILLING-LEH, 5-6HRS

Walk for half an hour from Tilatdo to Chilling. From Chilling 5hrs drive by taxi or bus to Leh . Reach Leh by evening.

Stay overnight in hotel at Leh.

DAY13 DEPARTURE FROM LEH

In the morning transfer to the Leh airport from where you will board the flight to Delhi.
